Train Fare Discounts – Do you qualify? The train stations offer
many discounts, mostly to travelers less than 26 years old. The Europass
and Eurailpass offer their “Youth” pass, which offers a discount as
well. However, in many cases, you will find that these passes are more
expensive then if you simply purchased the ticket on the day of travel
at the station. These passes are convenient because you do not need to
know where you are going (as long as you stay within the restricted
countries) up front and you just have a pass that lets you in the
station. If you end up buying tickets on the day of travel – the train
could be sold out. Youth discounts could run from 20% to 60% cheaper
than a regular priced ticket. If you total up all your ticket purchases
and compare it to the amount you spent on a pass, you might be
surprised. In many cases (in countries that are cheap to travel in), you
will find the pass actually cost more than your multiple tickets. Also,
you need to take into account, what type of trains you will be using –
high-speed trains are more expensive whereas inter-city trains are more
affordable.
